Belt Requirements

Dan Level: The following are your requirements for promotion to Black Belt (1st Degree):

  • BLOCKS: Low block, high block, In-out, Out-in, chops (low, middle high), X-blocks (low, high), spearhand jab, middle punch (horse stance), back fist reverse punch combination, double chops (low-middle, high-middle), double X-block (low-high, low-high), high block followed by a neck chop combination.
  • KICKS: Front snap, side snap, round house kick, double roundhouse, reverse kick, jump front snap kick, crescent (in-out, our-in), spinning crescent, triple roundhouse kick, combination out-in crescent kick followed by a reverse kick (back stance), spinning hook kick, jump spinning hook, jump crescent, straight up side kick, jump front snap (both legs), roundhouse with the ball of the foot, combination hook kick followed by a spinning hook kick, axe kick quadruple roundhouse (low-high, low-high).
  • ONE STEPS: 20 one steps: 5 take downs, 5 basic, 5 advanced 5 self defense (weapons may be used)
  • FORMS: Palgue Hyungs 1 through 8, Bassai, Free form (weapons may be used)
  • BOARD BREAKING: Will consist of multiple breaks (instructor will assign breaks – 6 boards)
  • SPARRING: Unlimited (Instructor’s discretion).
  • ESSAY QUESTIONS: Sa Bom will assign essay questions to be turned in prior to your test date Overall attitude and initiative towards the whole program will be counted plus leadership abilities.

1st Gup – Red 2: The following are your requirements for promotion to Red II Belt:

  • BLOCKS: In lieu of blocks, assigned board breaking: using ridge hand, middle punch, jump heel kick, and reverse kick. (Be prepared to perform all blocking techniques if requested by the promotion board.)
  • KICKS: Ax kick — front stance.
  • Jump front using both legs, combination hook kick followed by spinning hook kick, Quadruple roundhouse (low/high, low/high), combination out-in crescent followed by a reverse kick, combination roundhouse followed by a jumping out-in crescent kick, — back stance.
  • Jump reverse kick, jump side kick — back stance and on a bag.
  • ONE STEPS: Twelve one steps. No format.
  • FORMS: Palgue Hyungs 2, 5, 8, and Bassai. Be prepared to perform Hyungs 1 through 8 and Bassai.
  • SPARRING: At least 5 times, (be prepare for more than five rounds.)

2nd Gup – Red 1:

The following are your requirements for promotion to Red I Belt:

  • BLOCKS: In-out, out-in, spear hand jab, combination high block followed by a neck chop, double X-block (low/high and high/low), — front stances.
  • Double chops (low-middle, high-middle), combination back fist followed by a reverse punch — back stand.
  • Middle punch — horse stance.
  • KICKS: Roundhouse kick with the ball of the foot, crescent (out-in, in-out) — front stance.
  • Hook kick followed by a side kick, jump front snap using both legs, jump spinning hook kick, jump crescent, reverse kick — back stance.
  • Side kick — feet together.
  • ONE STEPS: Eight one steps. weapons may be used for either attacking or defending.
  • FORMS: Palgue Hyungs 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8. The testing board may require Hyungs 1 though 8. Be prepared!
  • SPARRING: At least 3 times.

3rd Gup – Red Belt:

The following are your requirements for promotion to Red Belt:

  • BLOCKS: Board breaking techniques. At lest four boards. Boards must be broken one after another in rapid succession. Speed is an important factor. Multiple breaks or stacked breaks are acceptable. Again, be prepared to blocking techniques required from 9th to 2nd Gup.
  • KICKS: Combination front snap to roundhouse, crescent (out-in/in-out) — front stance. Reverse kick, hook kick, heel kick, combination hook kick followed by a roundhouse, spinning crescent, jumping out-in crescent, spinning hook kick, jump spinning hook kick, jump crescent, jump roundhouse — back stance.
  • ONE STEPS: Six one steps. All moves must consist of self defense techniques, (get away techniques). No weapons may be used.
  • SPARRING: At least 3 times (once with Sa Bom). Students will normally have several “Free” matches. In other words, you will spar more than three times.
  • FORMS: Palgue Hyungs 4, 5, 6, and 7 will normally be required. However, the testing board can require Hyungs 1 though 7. So be prepared!
  • ESSAY QUESTIONS: Sa Bom will assign essay questions to be turned in prior to your test date.

4th Gup – Green 2:

The following are your requirements for promotion to Green II Belt:

  • BLOCKS: Low, High, X-Block (Low/High), Spear hand jab, — front stance; Out-in, In-out, Chops (low, middle, high), Back fist followed by reverse punch, — back stance; middle punch, — horse stance.
  • KICKS: Crescent (Out-in and In-out) — front stance.
  • Triple kick combination (roundhouse, sidekick, roundhouse), Hook kick, spinning Crescent, combination Hook kick followed by a roundhouse, Jumping Out-In crescent, Jump roundhouse, Heel kick, Spinning hook kick — back stance.
  • ONE STEPS: Five one steps; weapons may be used .
  • FORMS: Palgue Hyungs 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6.
  • SPARRING: At least 3 times.

5th Gup – Green 1:

The following are your requirements for promotion to Green I Belt:

  • BLOCKS: Board breaking techniques will generally be substituted (3 boards). Be prepared do all blocking techniques from 9th through 6th Gup.
  • KICKS: Triple Roundhouse (same area), Reverse kick, Crescent (out-in and in-out), Heel kick, Hook Kick, Jumping out-in Crescent, Spinning Crescent, Jump roundhouse, combination hook kick followed by a roundhouse.
  • ONE STEPS: Five one steps; weapons may be used .
  • FORMS: Palgue Hyungs 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5
  • SPARRING: At least 3 times.

6th Gup – Green Belt:

The following are your requirements for promotion to Green Belt:

  • BLOCKS: Low, High, X-Block (Low/High) Spearhand Jab – From a front stance.
  • Out-in, In-out, Chops (Low, Middle, High) – From a back stance (Some of the above terms will be given in Korean) .
  • KICKS: Side snap, Triple Roundhouse (low, middle, high), Reverse kick, Crescent (out-in and in-out), Heel kick, Jumping Out-In Crescent, Jump front snap (front and back legs), Spinning Crescent.
  • ONE STEPS: Five one steps; three must be take-downs.
  • FORMS: Palgue Hyungs 1, 2, 3, and 4.
  • SPARRING: At least 3 times, with grading based on Defense, Control, & Technique.

7th Gup – Orange 2:

The following are your requirements for promotion to Orange II Belt:

  • BLOCKS: Low, High, X-Block (Low/High) – From a front stance Out-in, In-out, Chops (Low, Middle, High) – From a back stance.
  • KICKS: Front Snap, Jump front snap (front & back legs), Crescent (Out-in/In/out) From a front stance.
  • Double roundhouse (same area), Reverse kick, Spinning crescent – From a back stance.
  • ONE STEPS: Five one steps; two must be take-downs.
  • FORMS: Palgue Hyungs 1, 2, and 3.
  • SPARRING: At least 3 times, with grading based on Defense, Control, & Technique.

8th Gup – Orange 1:

The following are your requirements for promotion to Orange I Belt:

  • BLOCKS: Low, High, X-Block (Low/High) – From a front stance Out-in, In-out, Chops (Low, Middle, High) – From a back stance.
  • KICKS: Front Snap, Side snap, Jump front snap (front & back legs) – Front stance Double roundhouse (low/high), Reverse kick – Back stance.
  • ONE STEPS: Five one steps; one must be a take-down.
  • FORMS: Palgue Hyungs 1 and 2 .
  • SPARRING: At least 3 times, with grading based on Defense, Control, & Technique.

9th Gup – Orange Belt:

The following are your requirements for promotion to Orange Belt:

  • BLOCKS: Low, High, Out-in, In-out (all in front stance)
  • Chops (low, middle, high in back stance)
  • KICKS: Front snap, Side Snap, Roundhouse (Front stance)
  • ONE STEPS: Five one steps (Instructor may prescribe techniques)
  • FORMS: Palgue Hyung 1
  • SPARRING: At least 3 times, with grading based on Defense, Control, & Technique.

10th Gup – White Belt:

  • Blocks – Low Block, Inside to Outside Block.
  • Middle Punch
  • Forms – Kicho I, Kicho II, Kicho III
